OAKLAND -- A small child was hit in the neck with shards of glass following a shootout Tuesday afternoon on 27th Avenue, police said.

The call came in shortly before 5 p.m. in the 1500 block of 27th Avenue, Officer Johnna Watson said.

It appears the child, who is about 5 or 6 years old, was hit with flying glass from a car window when shooters in two different vehicles fired at one another. The child's condition was unknown early Tuesday evening.

Police are on the scene searching for the suspects and have alerted the California Highway Patrol to be on the lookout for the suspect's cars. Descriptions of the vehicles were not immediately available Tuesday evening.
