HAYWARD -- An autopsy shows a man found unconscious in the hallway of a Hayward hotel last weekend died of internal bleeding, and although authorities don't know yet what caused the trauma, the death is considered suspicious.
Although 53-year-old Mark Mowdy's Sept. 16 autopsy revealed the cause of death, the Alameda County coroner has not determined if it was caused by a fall or a beating, Hayward Police Sgt. Ken Forkus said.
"At this point we're investigating it as a suspicious death," Forkus said.
Officers were dispatched at 6:41 a.m. on Sept. 14 to the Phoenix Lodge at 500 W. A St. after police say a hotel guest found Mowdy in a second-floor hallway.
Mowdy, a transient whose last known address was San Leandro and who was known to frequent Alameda, was taken to a hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced dead a short time later, Forkus said.
Police said Mowdy was not a registered guest at the hotel and on Friday continued to investigate why he was there and if he was with anyone before his death.
