SAN LEANDRO -- Police arrested an armed suspect and were searching Monday morning for a second suspect after an elderly man was robbed at gunpoint less than a half mile from the Oakland border.

Damari Mathews, 19, of Oakland was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery in connection to the Friday attack in a residential area about one block northeast of San Leandro Boulevard, said San Leandro police Lt. Randy Brandt.

Witnesses told police that at around 5:45 p.m. two suspects approached the victim who was walking near Pershing Drive and Garcia Avenue and robbed him. A witness in a nearby vehicle honked their car horn and scared the suspects off, Brandt said.

The victim was not injured.

Witnesses provided a description of the gunmen and one of the suspects -- later identified as Mathews -- was caught and arrested in Oakland a short time later. The other suspect remained at large on Monday, police said.

He was described as a black man, 5 feet 10 inches, with a medium build and dark colored hair. He was last seen armed with a handgun and wearing dark clothing.
