OAKLAND -- Hawthorne Elementary School in Oakland's Fruitvale District was briefly on lockdown Thursday morning while law enforcement officers searched for a parolee possibly seen in the area with a gun, police said.
The lockdown began at 10:20 a.m. when sheriff's deputies apparently spotted the man, a convicted robber.
The man fled and Oakland police responded to help search for the suspect. Several streets around the school were blocked off, including East 17th Street between 28th Avenue and where 17th dead-ends at a park, and 29th Avenue between East 16th and East 17th streets.
The suspect may have fled into a canal that runs east of the school, police said.
The lockdown was lifted at 11:05 a.m.
