OAKLAND -- A fire Tuesday morning destroyed the garage at an East Oakland home, authorities said.

The fire erupted about 8:57 a.m. in the detached garage of the house in the 2700 block of 76th Avenue.

The house was apparently being renovated and the owner had moved clothes, furniture, televisions and his pet snake into the garage.

It was not immediately known what kind of snake it was or if it survived.

The fire was brought under control in a few minutes and there were no injuries to firefighters or the resident, officials said.

Battalion Fire Chief Eric Logan said the cause of the fire has not been determined and he did not have a damage estimate.
