NEWARK -- Evergreen Oil has announced that maintenance work on its oil refinery equipment this week may release odors that might draw complaints from nearby residents.
The recycling plant shut down its oil re-refinery equipment Saturday for the routine maintenance. Evergreen Oil officials said they expect odors to be released during the equipment's cleaning process, which began Tuesday and will conclude Wednesday.
"We will be employing odor mitigation activities to reduce the potential of nuisance odors," company officials said Tuesday in a written statement.
Since 1984, the Newark business has been at 6880 Smith Ave., near Cherry Street and a development of single-family homes. During Evergreen Oil's nearly 30 years of operation, residents living nearby have complained often about unpleasant odors emitted by the company.
Residents detecting any odors coming from the plant this week can contact its on-site supervisor at 510-608-0180.
