Oakland launched a new web application Tuesday to help manage public record requests.

RecordTrac is designed to help users track the progress of their requests and help the city satisfy the requests more efficiently. Information provided in response to requests will be stored in a searchable archive for users seeking similar data.

The system was built by the city's Code for America fellows, who have been working on the project since February. Oakland is one of 10 cities that were selected for this year's Code for America program that provides young techies a chance to make government more transparent.

The new system can be found at http://records.oaklandnet.com.
