ALAMEDA -- The drivers pulling into the parking lot and the customers pushing shopping carts filled with merchandise provide the answer if anyone is still wondering: When will Target open in Alameda?

The glass doors slid open Wednesday, and it was immediately business as usual for the retail chain: Employees wearing Target's signature red shirts and khaki pants were busy serving customers who were browsing and shopping for everything from sponges and photo frames to shirts and toothpaste.

"It's the convenience; that's what's best about it," said Marianne Sheehan, 26, of Oakland's Laurel district, as she loaded groceries into her car after visiting the store. "I usually go the Target in Emeryville. But this will be closer and easier for me to get to."

Eugene Cheung, 62, another Oakland resident, did not plan on visiting the store but decided to stop by on opening day after he met a friend for coffee on Webster Street.

"I knew they were building it because I had noticed the construction," Cheung said. "I was curious as to how it finally looked."

His thoughts after a quick walk-through? "Actually, it's much like any other department store," he said. "Right now, it's pretty spotless since it's so new, which makes it kind of pleasant."

The store is about 140,000 square feet and will employ about 200 workers. Construction began in July 2012.

City officials say the Minnesota-based retailer, which is also opening a store in San Rafael this week, will serve as an anchor tenant of the 285,000-square-foot retail center at Alameda Landing, where a Safeway is also planned.

Alameda Landing is located on 77 acres near the Oakland-Alameda Estuary that was once the site of a supply center for the former Alameda Naval Air Station. It borders Bayport housing near College of Alameda.

Along with the retail center, the project calls for 275 homes, including condominiums and single-family homes and an apartment building with 23 affordable units.

The retail center is expected to generate about $786,000 annually in sales tax revenue for the city when it is fully occupied, city officials say.
