NEWARK -- A 51-year-old man was killed after his Jeep slammed into a tree at the intersection of Dairy Avenue and Newark Boulevard on Friday night, police said.

Officers responded to calls of a collision around 9:47 p.m. and when they arrived they saw a 1995 Jeep had hit a tree head on, according to Newark police.

Alameda County firefighters were able to extract the man, who has not been identified, from the car. He was the sole occupant in the car.

No one else was injured.

The man was taken to San Jose Regional Medical Center in "grave condition," police said, but upon his arrival to the hospital, he died.

An investigation into the collision is ongoing.
