9 children injured in school bus crash
Nine students suffered minor injuries when a school bus they were riding in was rear-ended by an SUV in San Bernardino.
The California Highway Patrol says the City Unified School District bus was stopped at a red light at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday when it was struck by a 2010 Suburban.
Nine students complained of pain and were transported to hospitals.
It's unclear how old the students are or what school they attend.
Yellow fever mosquito detected in state
A mosquito capable of transmitting deadly yellow fever, dengue and other diseases has been detected for the first time in California.
Vector control agents are now scrambling to control the so-called yellow mosquito's spread.
Tim Phillips of the Fresno Mosquito and Vector Control District says the bugs first were detected in the Central Valley communities of Madera and Clovis in June. They were found this week in the city of Fresno.
The brown mosquitoes with white markings bite during the day, prefer humans and need only a teaspoon of water to lay eggs to reproduce.
So far none of the mosquitoes that have been trapped have carried diseases.
The mosquitoes acquire yellow fever and dengue from infected humans and then transfer them to other people.
3-year-old bear dies after being hit by car
Authorities say a bear that died after apparently being hit by a car in northern Los Angeles County is the same bear that was tranquilized and released after wandering into a residential area.
City News Service reports the 3-year-old, 275-pound bear was found dead Tuesday on a porch in the Littlerock area of the Antelope Valley.
Last Friday the bear was found 30 miles to the south, in a community at the edge of the San Gabriel Mountains. Baldwin Park police discovered the animal about eight feet up a tree. It was tranquilized and set loose in the Angeles National Forest.
Man charged with murder of teacher
Los Angeles County prosecutors have filed a murder case against a 50-year-old man accused of stabbing a teacher to death in front of her students at a Long Beach park.
The district attorney's office says Steven Dwayne Brown will be arraigned Wednesday afternoon on the murder count along with a special circumstance of lying in wait and an allegation of personal use of a deadly weapon.
Kellye Taylor, 53, was stabbed in the neck Oct. 11 while she was with her Huntington Academy students and other teachers at Orizaba Park.
Prosecutors say the defendant was in a relationship with the victim's daughter.
