SAN LEANDRO -- Macy's Bayfair store has completed renovations to spruce up the store in advance of the Black Friday shopping madness.
The department store on East 14th Street has added 6,000 square feet for more merchandise and about a dozen new brands of dresses, jeans, watches and sports merchandise. The store has also upgraded its dressing rooms and women's department.
The sprucing up comes as Macy's prepares for Black Friday sales, which come earlier for the retailer this year than ever before. For the first time in its 155-year history, most Macy's will open at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, and stay open around-the-clock through Black Friday. Last year, the department store opened at midnight, while competitors Sears, Toys R Us and Walmart opened at 8 p.m.
According to survey published last week by consulting service Accenture, 38 percent of U.S. consumers plan to hit the stores before midnight on Thanksgiving Day, leaving the dinner table early to nab doorbuster deals at their favorite retailers.
