OAKLAND -- An Oakland man has pleaded guilty to five counts of bank robbery and two counts of attempted bank robbery for stealing thousands of dollars from various East Bay branches last year, according to federal authorities.

Amanuel Moreno, 21, admitted to stealing more than $6,100 by robbing five banks in Hayward, Oakland and San Leandro between December 2012 and January 2013, according to federal authorities.

He also attempted to rob the Chase Bank in Alameda and the Chase Bank in Union City on two different days last December, federal authorities said.

Moreno was arrested in January by local law enforcement and remained in custody on a probation violation until he was transferred to federal custody on July 5. Moreno will be sentenced on Feb. 6 and could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison for each count of bank robbery and attempted bank robbery.
