SAN LEANDRO -- A man hit and killed by an Amtrak train Wednesday morning has been identified as a 70-year-old San Leandro man, authorities said.

Maximo Cayabyab was pushing a shopping cart full of recyclables and crossing Washington Avenue near Floresta Boulevard when a southbound train hit him at about 9:10 a.m., according to Sgt. Joe Molettieri. He died at the scene.

Police said Cayabyab's shopping cart may have become stuck on the tracks before the collision.

Authorities shut down a portion of Washington Avenue near Floresta Boulevard for a few hours to investigate the collision.
