HAYWARD -- A dirt-bike rider suffered life-threatening injuries after striking a car Wednesday night in the Southgate neighborhood, police said.
The male rider, who police said is from Hayward, was not wearing a helmet.
The crash took place about 8 p.m. in a residential area near the intersection of Huron Lane and Kay Avenue, said Sgt. Mark Ormsby.
Police said the man was riding a dirt bike on Huron Avenue when he broadsided a gray, newer-model Toyota Prius. The impact launched the man from the bike, Ormsby said, and he landed 30 feet away.
The man, who suffered major brain and head trauma, was taken to Eden Medical Center to be treated for his injuries.
As of Thursday he remained in critical condition, Ormsby said.
The driver of the Prius, also a Hayward man, was not injured. No charges had been filed in the crash as of Thursday.
It was not immediately known if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
