A public meeting on the effort to purchase the former Agnews Developmental Center, to build a park and a K-8 school and high school, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Don Callejon School Multipurpose Room, 4176 Lick Mill Blvd., Santa Clara.

The Santa Clara Unified School District Board of Education and representatives from the city of San Jose will hear comment from the community about the the joint effort to purchase the 81-acre Agnews site at 3500 Zanker Road, San Jose.

After negotiations between the school district and the state stalled, the California Department of General Services put the land that once housed a state mental hospital out to public bid. The bids are due Nov. 21.

Santa Clara Unified expects an influx of students from 32,000 homes planned to be built in North San Jose, near the Agnews site.

Assemblyman Bob Wieckowski, D-Fremont, who authored a bill to allow the state to sell surplus property for schools at less than market value, will also attend the meeting.
