HAYWARD -- Police on Wednesday were investigating whether drag racing was to blame for a weekend crash that killed a Hayward man.
Jorge Gutierrez Jr., 31, was hospitalized in critical condition after a Sunday afternoon crash along Mission Boulevard and died Tuesday evening, said Sgt. Ken Forkus.
Gutierrez was driving an orange 2007 supercharged Ford Mustang at a high rate of speed south on Mission Boulevard at 12:23 p.m., police said. When he approached the intersection of Harder Road, he lost control, struck a tree and then hit two nearby parked cars.
Gutierrez was taken to a hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries.
He died Tuesday at 8:22 p.m., Forkus said.
"Witnesses say there was a blue Mustang that appeared to be racing that car before it crashed," Forkus said Wednesday. "We have located that car, and the incident remains under investigation."
Police are also investigating whether alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.
Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact Hayward police at 510-293-7034.
