ALAMEDA USS Hornet Museum: 10 a.m.-5 p.m., from Nov. 11th through Nov. 17th, the USS Hornet Museum will offer free admission to veterans with valid military ID. Antioch Veterans Day Ceremony and Parade: Activities begin 9:30 a.m. Nov. 11 with a Huey helicopter landing and guest speakers at the Veterans Memorial, Antioch Marina, foot of L Street. Crockett Parade and open house: The Crockett Museum, 900 Loring Ave. in Crockett, holds its annual Veterans Day open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 11. The observance starts with a parade from Memorial Hall to the museum, featuring the John Swett High School marching band and Boy Scouts from Troop 171-173 carrying the colors.
DANVILLE Veterans Day Open House: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 9, noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 10 and 11, Veterans Memorial Building, 400 Hartz Ave. An event to honor veterans and thank the community for supporting the new Veterans Memorial Building for the San Ramon Valley. There will be military displays: uniformed mannequins, field gear, vehicles, weapons and living history personnel and staff from veterans organizations to answer questions. Veterans Tribute -- 10 a.m. Nov. 11, San Ramon Valley High School Performing Arts Center, 501 Danville Blvd. There will be a special tribute video/slide show honoring Vietnam veterans. The program begins at 11 a.m. and features speaker: Col. Allen Cruz, USMC (Ret), Vietnam War veteran, and includes music by San Ramon Valley High School's music groups with participation by Scouts and veterans service organizations. Discovery Bay Blue Star Moms Veterans Memorial Garden Ceremony: 2 p.m. Nov. 11, Slifer Park, New Port Drive, Discovery Bay. The Discovery Bay Garden Club will host a dedication and formal transfer of the Blue Star Veterans Memorial Garden and Stone to the Town of Discovery Bay. El Cerrito Flag placement at Sunset View: El Cerrito Lions Club members are again sponsoring the Veterans Day placement of flags on the graves of those who served at 8 a.m. Nov. 11 at Sunset View Cemetery, 101 Colusa Ave. The event is rain or shine and opens with a brief ceremony in honor of veterans. Ellen Corbett and Chief Pharmacist Mate David Lee Holly Sr., who was among the survivors of the sinking of the hospital ship USS Benevolence in August 1950. Martinez Veterans Day Ceremony: 10 a.m. Nov. 11. The ceremony begins at the Alhambra Cemetery, Carquinez Scenic Drive with a benediction, bag piper, placing of the wreath and the Pledge of Allegiance. At 11 a.m. the program continues at the All Veterans Monument, Alhambra Avenue, Berrellesa Street with remarks from Mayor Rob Schroder, a letter from Congressman George Miller, remarks from Supervisor Federal Glover, and Tom Prado, retired Marine, Iraq War veteran. Navy Compartmented Information U.S. Navy Petty Officer Steven D. Powell and Remembrance Veterans Commissioner Scott Alstad will sing the national anthem. The ceremony will conclude with a 21-gun salute by the American Legion Post 29 and VFW Post 1351; taps played by Jennifer Oertel. PINOLE Observance at Fernandez Park: The Pinole Historical Society hosts the sixth annual Veterans Day Memorial and Flag Retirement Ceremony at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 in Fernandez Park, 595 Tennent Ave. The event will feature Boy Scout Troop 86, West Contra Costa Girl Scouts, Veterans of Foreign Wars, several local schools, the marching band and a cappella choir from Pinole Valley High School and elected officials. Scouts will retire worn United States flags at no charge.
Pittsburg Inaugural Veterans Benefit Jam: 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9, California Theatre, 351 Railroad Ave. The event is in recognition and appreciation of veterans service and will help support The Veterans Employment Committee of Contra Costa County. Richmond Ceremony and ribbon-cutting: 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at SS Red Oak Victory, 1337 Canal Blvd. in the Port of Richmond, with music, remarks and a laying of flowers in memory of those who served. SAN LEANDRO Veterans Day Observance: 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at San Leandro Senior Community Center, 13909 E. 14th St. Presentation of flags, color guards and flag-raising ceremony for deceased veterans. Ceremony honors Margaret Edmund, who served as a nurse during World War II, receiving two commendations for service under fire. Edmund died this year at age 100. Information: 510-577-6079.
Walnut Creek Veteran's Day Civic Ceremony: 11 a.m. Nov. 11, Lesher Center for the Arts, Hofmann Theatre, 1601 Civic Drive, Walnut Creek. The ceremony includes a welcome from Walnut Creek Mayor Cindy Silva and a musical concert of patriotic songs with a salute to all the branches of the Armed Forces by the Walnut Creek Concert Band.
