OAKLAND -- A ship crew member died in an accident Monday afternoon at the Port of Oakland, authorities said.
The crew member, who has not yet been identified, died after falling from a crane at around 2:30 p.m., according to police.
A spokeswoman for Schnitzer Steel Industries, located at 1101 Embarcadero West, said the person was a member aboard the cargo ship Albert Oldondorff, which arrived at Schnitzer's Oakland facility on Saturday morning.
The crew member was not part of Schnitzer's ship loading staff, said Jackie Lynn Ray, public relations and government affairs manager for the large scrap metal recycling company. The incident is under investigation, she said.
"We send our deepest condolences to the crew and his family," Ray said.
