OAKLAND -- Officials are trying to reach the family of a ship crew member who died in an accident Monday afternoon near the Port of Oakland, authorities said Tuesday.
The identity of the crew member, a 65-year-old Polish citizen who worked as an electrician, has not been released. He was apparently inspecting a crane when he fell on a deck below about 2:30 p.m., authorities said. It was not yet known what caused him to fall.
On Monday, a spokeswoman for Schnitzer Steel Industries said the man was a crew member on the cargo ship Albert Oldondorff, which arrived at Schnitzer's Oakland facility on Saturday.
