Police responding to a Shotspotter report found the man about 6:04 a.m. in the 1200 block of 78th Avenue, a few blocks from the Oakland Coliseum. He had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the man was walking on the sidewalk when people in two cars traveling southbound on 98th Avenue began shooting at each other.

No one in the cars was hit, police said, but the wounded man called a friend who drove him to a hospital where he was in stable condition Saturday. His name was not released.

There was no description given of the cars of the suspects involved in the shooting, who are being sought. Police were not sure why they were shooting at each other but have not ruled out the possibility it was gang related.
