SAN JOSE -- A 50-year-old woman was hit and killed by a car while walking along Monterey Road on Monday night, marking the city's third pedestrian death in two days, according to the San Jose Police Department.
The woman, who police described as a transient, was walking in the roadway between San Jose and Phelan avenues around 10:45 p.m. when she was hit by a Toyota Corolla. She died at the scene.
The male Corolla driver stopped at the scene and cooperated with police. Sgt. Heather Randol, a police spokeswoman, said the woman was wearing dark clothing and was not in a crosswalk when it occurred.
The collision remains under investigation.
It marked the city's 39th traffic death and the 24th involving a pedestrian, which is the highest such total in nearly a decade, according to police figures.
