OAKLAND -- A man fatally shot Sunday night in the upper Fruitvale district was identified by police Monday as Michael Stenger, 20.

Stenger, of Oakland, was walking in the 3100 block of Coolidge Avenue on his way to a relative's house just before 10 p.m. Sunday when a green car pulled up and someone inside shot him, police said.

Stenger died at the scene. The gunman fled in the car and is being sought.

Officer Phong Tran said Monday police are trying to determine a motive for the killing.

Stenger lived about a mile away and police were told he was the father of a young child.

The killing was Oakland's 84th homicide of 2013. Last year at this time there were 117 homicides in the city.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the killer. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
