STOCKTON (AP) -- An officer-involved shooting has shut down southbound Interstate 5 in Stockton.

The highway remained closed as of 6:30 a.m. Thursday. California Highway Patrol Officer Rich Wetzel tells the Sacramento Bee the incident began as a police pursuit that ended on I-5.

The suspect was wanted on suspicion of attempted homicide.

Wetzel says a Stockton police officer shot the man after he brandished a knife. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

A call to a Stockton police spokesman was not immediately returned.
