UNION CITY -- A San Jose man suspected of assaulting and kidnapping an ex-girlfriend in Hayward was captured by SWAT team members inside a Union City home this week after evading police for more than three days.
Suspect Matthew Anthony Rossi, 29, was found by officers inside a home on the 500 block of Carobee Court and arrested without incident about 5 p.m. Tuesday, said Fremont Police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques.
A three-day search for Rossi began on Saturday about 10:50 a.m. when Fremont police were called to a home in the Centerville area for a domestic violence report.
A witness told a 911 dispatcher that a family member's ex-boyfriend was violating a restraining order by attempting to contact her, showing up at her house and following her around town, Bosques said.
While responding to the call, police learned that the suspect threatened to harm the victim and that he also was wanted by Hayward police on suspicion of kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon and criminal threats against another ex-girlfriend.
About 12:10 p.m., police spotted a motorcycle matching the description of Rossi's headed toward the victim's home, Bosques said. When the driver noticed officers, he sped off and led police on a short pursuit. For safety reasons, officers said they soon stopped chasing him.
Several hours later, Union City police spotted the motorcycle and attempted to stop the driver but were unsuccessful, Bosques said. During that incident, the driver ditched the bike in the front yard of a home and ran off.
Then on Tuesday afternoon officers tracked him to the Union City home where Fremont SWAT team members and Union City police arrested him on suspicion of violating a restraining order, making criminal threats and recklessly evading police.
He was also arrested on kidnapping and assault charges in connection to the Hayward incident.
Records show he was booked into the Santa Rita Jail where he was being held Thursday on $175,000 bail. He is due in court later this week to be arraigned on the charges.
