A 14-year-old girl suffered major injuries Friday morning after she was struck by a car while crossing a busy street, police said.

Officers and first responders were dispatched at 7:37 a.m. to Cherry Street and Robertson Avenue on a report of a vehicle hitting a pedestrian, Newark police Detective Sgt. Manuel DeSerpa said.

Police learned the girl was in a crosswalk at Cherry Street near Redeker Place walking east when she was struck by a Honda Civic traveling south.

The girl was taken to a hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries, DeSerpa said.

The driver of the Honda, an unidentified male, was cooperating with police and as of Friday morning had not been cited.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call police at 510-578-4237.
