World leaders, celebrities, and citizens from all walks of life gathered on Tuesday to pay respects during a memorial service for the former South African president and anti-apartheid icon.

Oakland -- The city is celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela on Wednesday.

The city, which was on the vanguard of opposing the South Africa's racist Apartheid regime, will hold a public gathering from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Frank Ogawa Plaza.

The event will include an address from South African Consul General Cyril S. Ndaba, readings of Mandela's writings and speeches from local youth and a tribute song by Vukani Mawethu Choir, which performed during Mandela's 1990 visit to Oakland.
