OAKLAND -- A driver was arrested Wednesday evening after he backed into a friend, who later died from his injuries, at a West Oakland parking lot, police said Thursday.
The Alameda County Coroner's Office identified the man killed as Henry Warrick Jr., 47, of Oakland.
The driver was identified by police as Marcus Perkins, 35, of Oakland. Police said he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury and vehicular manslaughter.
The incident happened about 4:52 p.m. Wednesday in a parking lot in the 1000 block of Mandela Parkway.
Police said Perkins and Warrick were friends who had been socializing and drinking in the parking lot. Perkins had gotten into his Mercedes sedan to leave and thought he had the gear shift in neutral, police said.
Instead it was in reverse and when he hit the accelerator the car went backward onto the sidewalk striking Warrick.
Warrick died later at a hospital.
Police are still looking for witnesses. Anyone with information may call investigators at 510-777-8570.
