HAYWARD -- A scuffle over who got to decorate a Christmas tree led to the arrest of an aspiring Bay Area rapper suspected of nearly ripping a woman's ear from her head.

Kenyatta Dupree, 19, of Hayward -- who goes by the nickname "NonStop" -- was charged by Alameda County prosecutors Thursday with battery causing serious bodily injury in connection to an attack Saturday at a Hayward apartment complex where he lives with his family.

The melee began inside an apartment at 25910 Cypress Ave. after a 19-year-old Hayward woman visited her boyfriend's home with her children, according to Sgt. Mark Ormsby.

Just before 9:50 p.m. the woman put down her two children to sleep in a bedroom and her boyfriend began to decorate the Christmas tree so the children could see it when they woke up, Ormsby said.

At some point during the holiday decorating, the boyfriend's brother -- identified by police as Dupree -- walked out of a bedroom and asked his brother why he was decorating the tree, claiming it was a "family event."

The brothers began to argue and at some point, police said, Dupree's brother told him to leave the home.

Dupree then reportedly walked out the front door, which police say was promptly slammed behind him by his brother's girlfriend. Dupree, who police say was unnerved by the woman's actions, then forced the front door open and tackled her to the ground.

The two began to fight and during the melee, rolled out the front door, police said.

At that point, the victim said, the suspect put her in a headlock and she felt a sharp pain coming from her left ear.

The suspect let go of the victim, who was bleeding heavily from the head, with her ear partially detached from her scalp, according to police.

The victim's boyfriend took her to a hospital where police say she required 11 sutures to reattach the ear.

Meanwhile, police arrested Dupree without incident at the scene and he was booked into the Santa Rita Jail. Online records show he recently posted bail.

According to an online biography by Brickhouse Talk, Dupree is a rapper and producer born in Oakland in 1994. It goes on to say he's a "motivated hip-hop artist with lyrical and beat making abilities highly compared to mainstream artists today" and that he's been rapping and producing beats at FL Studio.

Dupree could not be immediately reached for comment.

Court records show he's due in court for a hearing on his case next month.
