OAKLAND -- A 75-year-old man was found dead at an Oakland home Saturday after a small bathroom fire, according to a fire official.

The fire was reported on the 2300 block of Thackeray Drive about 4:30 p.m., battalion chief Adrian Sheppard said.

En route to the blaze, crews were informed that a man may have been trapped inside a bathroom. Sheppard said the fire was quickly contained and that when crews went in to search for the man, they found him dead in the bathroom.

Sheppard said it is unknown if the man died as a result of smoke inhalation or if he died from a medical condition. He added that while the cause of the fire is still under investigation, it is suspected the man brought a cigarette into the bathroom with him.

According to Sheppard, the cigarette may have led to the fire.

The man's identity was not immediately released.
