FREMONT -- Abode Services is asking the public to donate items to help thousands of homeless and low-income residents stay warm during the cold winter weather.
The Fremont nonprofit organization, which helps the homeless in Alameda and Santa Clara counties, said six Bay Area homeless residents have died since Thanksgiving because of cold overnight temperatures. So, officials are asking donors to give blankets, sleeping bags, a knit cap, a pair of gloves or other items that will keep residents warm.
Donated items should be new or in very good condition, officials said.
Abode Services is accepting donations at Sunrise Village Emergency Shelter, at 588 Brown Road, in the city's East Industrial neighborhood. The shelter is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekends.
Abode officials also encourage donors to provide gift cards, transportation cards or money.
Monetary donations also can be made online at www.abodeservices.org.
