OAKLAND -- A 21-year-old man has been charged with murder in the fatal Oct. 10 shooting of a neighborhood acquaintance, authorities said Friday.
Eric Lockhart is charged with killing Trent Prater, 52, outside Prater's home in the 10600 block of Topanga Drive in the Sobrante Park district.
Lockhart, who was arrested Tuesday outside his Sobrante Park home a few blocks from the killing, is also charged with arson because police suspect he was the person who set fire to the van he used to flee the scene of the shooting.
Police said Lockhart and Prater had verbally argued before Prater was shot. Officer Phong Tran said police still don't have a motive for the killing, but did say it did not appear to be a robbery.
Prater was married, had two sons and worked as a truck driver, police said.
Tran said police were able to identify Lockhart as the suspected gunman because of witnesses who came forward as well as video surveillance of the van leaving the area.
Tran said Lockhart denied involvement in the killing. He is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.
