RICHMOND -- Police said two squatters were in custody on Monday evening after officers found them trespassing inside an abandoned home filled with stolen property.

Officers were called at 6:30 a.m. to a vacant home on the 300 block of South 25th Street for a report of two people squatting inside, said Sgt. Nicole Abetkov.

When police arrived they found two suspects -- a 39-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman -- inside the home and arrested them on suspicion of trespassing, Abetkov said.

As officers investigated the area, they noticed the front door to a home next door had been kicked in. When they entered the home they noticed it had been recently ransacked, Abetkov said.

Police returned to the abandoned home where the two suspects had been staying and found property that they say had been taken from the home next door and possibly other homes in the area.

The couple was also arrested on suspicion of possessing stolen property.

Police would not release the names of the suspects because they said they are investigating the possibility that they are tied to other home break-ins in the Bay Area, including one that took place in El Cerrito.

Both suspects were being held at County Jail in Martinez on Monday night.

Anyone with information about the break-ins is asked to call police at 510-621-9855.
