OAKLAND -- Mayor Jean Quan gave away about 100 tickets to the Oakland Ballet Company's season ending performance of "The Nutcracker" Tuesday. Quan paid for the tickets herself and handed them out outside the Paramount Theatre to children and families who otherwise would not have been able to attend the ballet.

The performance wrapped up a month of charity events in Oakland that included the city's annual free holiday meal on Monday and the 33rd annual Mayor's Community Toy Drive. The toy drive provided more than 20,000 toys to about 8,000 needy children.

"I have been so inspired by the generosity of Oaklanders and our corporate friends and partners this year to give kids and families some cheer this holiday season," Quan said in a prepared statement.
