Spare the Air alert issued for Tuesday

The final day of 2013 will be another no-burn day in the Bay Area.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has announced a winter Spare the Air alert for Tuesday, making it illegal to burn wood, manufactured fire logs or solid fuels indoors or outdoors for 24 hours. The alert is the 23rd issued by the district since the winter season began Nov. 1.

According to the district, a high-pressure system is trapping fine particulates low to the ground, making Bay Area air quality unhealthy.

First-time violators may be subject to a $100 fine or given the option of taking a wood smoke awareness class. Subsequent violations will result in fines of $500 or more.
