MORGAN HILL -- Police arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of driving under the influence, hit-and-run and other charges related to a New Year's Day incident in which a pregnant woman was injured in a crash with a driver who fled the scene.

According to Morgan Hill police, San Jose resident Esteban Sanchez had been arrested four times before on suspicion of driving under the influence. Around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, he crashed his Mazda 3 into the pregnant woman's car on East Dunne Avenue, then drove away only to smash into a fire hydrant on Butterfield Boulevard at Barrett Avenue, authorities said.

He then got out of his car and ran away, but officers found him in the industrial area of Caputo Drive, where he was taken into custody. He was booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, driving under the influence, resisting arrest, driving with a suspended license and probation violation.

Sanchez remains in custody without bail. He has a court date on Monday.

The severity of the pregnant woman's injuries was not divulged by police.
