PLEASANTON -- A Pleasanton resident's keen eye and initiative led to the arrest of four men suspected of stealing mail and other property from 13 cities within Contra Costa, San Mateo and Solano counties, police said.

The resident spotted one of the men removing mail from mailboxes on MacDonald Court on Friday night around 9:20 p.m., Pleasanton police Lt. Scott Rohovit said. That resident immediately called police, and responding officers found a silver 2011 Nissan Versa that matched the resident's description of the vehicle being used by the alleged mailbox thief, Rohovit said.

Four men were in the Nissan when police spotted it on Olsen Drive, and all consented to a police search of the vehicle.

Police found mail in the car along with other stolen property and drugs, Rohovit said.

Concord residents Elmer Aguilar, 18, Gustavo E. Rivas, 31, and Ruben J. Ramirez, 23, were arrested along with 23-year-old David A. Gonzalez, of Antioch. All four were booked into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of possessing stolen property, forgery, conspiracy. Each also faces an array of unspecified drug-related charges, including possession, he said.

Police said that without the resident's actions, the four likely would still be on the loose. They did not specify from which cities the stolen property and mail were recovered.
