OAKLAND -- Alta Bates Summit Medical Center is cutting 358 positions and shutting down its skilled nursing facility.
The hospital, which has several East Bay campuses, will eliminate 195 jobs at Summit in Oakland, 133 jobs at Alta Bates in Berkeley and 30 at Herrick in Berkeley, according to the state Employment Development Department.
The company also is closing its skilled nursing facility and infusion program at Summit in Oakland, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The layoffs equal about 175 full-time jobs, said Carolyn Kemp, a spokeswoman for Sutter Health, which owns Alta Bates Summit. The layoffs were to take effect Friday, but Sutter asked the state to give it more time to reassign employees. The hospital has 4,471 employees at its combined sites, she said.
"I do not know how many people ultimately will leave," Kemp said.
"We are working very hard to reduce staffing through attrition and retraining employees to fill critical vacancies," she said. The layoffs affect nearly every job description, she said.
A nurse who worked in the intensive care unit at Alta Bates Summit called the layoffs outrageous.
"Why would you do that when you already are so short-staffed in the hospital on every shift and in every unit?" said Mike Hill, a member of the California Nurses Association's negotiating team.
Sutter will be referring patients from its infusion services program and its skilled nursing facility to other East Bay locations. The infusion program will close at the end of this month, and the skilled nursing facility will close March 2, Kemp said.
Alta Bates Summit's average daily patient count dropped 18.3 percent from 2010 to today, she said. During the same time period, the hospital cut its staff by 5.7 percent. The hospital is losing money at a "terrible rate," she said.
"We wouldn't be doing it unless we had to, but it is abundantly clear we must refocus on our core mission as an acute care facility," Kemp said.
"This won't be the last of the changes. This will be a multiyear process."
