MORGAN HILL -- A 27-year-old man who was in custody on suspicion of drunken driving had his escape plan thwarted when officers observed him trying to escape after using a hidden handcuff key, police said.
According to Morgan Hill police, David Price was spotted speeding through a residential neighborhood early Sunday morning, careening onto the sidewalk at Oak Creek Park and driving against traffic on Monterey Road.
Price, who was being followed by an off-duty officer, fishtailed his vehicle onto Middle Avenue and nearly hit street signs, police said. At that point, a Santa Clara County sheriff tried to pull Price over but was ignored, police said.
Price eventually stopped on east Middle Avenue at Llagas Road in San Martin.
"Price who smelled of alcohol was uncooperative with the officers as he was taken into custody," reads the police report. "Later at the Morgan Hill Police Department, Price used a hidden handcuff key in an attempt to escape."
Officers who were watching Price stopped the escape attempt, and he was booked into Santa Clara County Jail on charges of driving under the influence and attempting to escape police custody.
