MORGAN HILL - Morgan Hill police say they are seeing an increase in thefts of catalytic converters, and are advising residents on how to protect their cars.

To deter thieves, police are encouraging residents to park their vehicles in a garage or secure side yard, or in an area with motion detector lights or continuous lights.

In addition, police said, residents should consider getting their catalytic converters etched with their vehicle license plate numbers -- and in some cases might want to have a muffler shop add reinforcement that makes the converter difficult to remove, police said.

Anyone who sees a suspicious person under a vehicle should get a description of the person and write down the person's license plate number if it is possible to do so safely, police said.

If a crime is in progress, residents should call 911. Non-emergency calls can be made to (408) 779-2101.
