For factory farms, roaches a small worry
This is regarding the Jan. 9 article "Roaches found at Central California chicken plant."
Let me get this straight: Federal officials wouldn't shut down Foster Farms when there was a salmonella outbreak a few months ago -- one in which hundreds of people were hospitalized and sickened across the nation -- but a roach infestation shuts its doors?
Do people understand they're eating dead, decomposing body parts contaminated with feces, antibiotic-resistant bacteria and god knows what else from birds who lived miserable lives in filth?
If you eat factory-farmed animals like Foster Farms chicken, roaches are probably the least of your worries.
Nation must change its outdated views
The Jan. 10 article, "Drug probe targets nuclear officers," is a pitiful reminder of how Cold War thinking continues to plague the American security apparatus. Even though the Cold War ended with the demise of the Soviet Union, we continue to live under its umbrella fighting fictional enemies with outdated weapons systems.
We need a new vision for all facets of American life still immersed in Cold War thinking and visions. Fortunately, such a vision exists with the National Strategic Narrative co-authored by Navy Capt. Wayne Porter and retired Marine Col. Mark Mykleby.
While the National Strategic Narrative makes no specific policy recommendations, it does offer a lofty vision to move us beyond outdated thinking that Americans of all political persuasions have widely heralded when hearing Porter and Mykleby outline it. Blame for massacre has been misplaced
Now that Ariel Sharon has died, the subject of the 1982 massacre at Sabra and Shatilla is revived.
Sharon was considered to be indirectly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. Who was directly responsible? No Israeli soldiers were involved. Although the incident occurred in Lebanon, the Lebanese government has failed to examine what was done.
What we do know is that Lebanese Christian fighters entered a Palestinian refugee campm and hundreds of people were killed. Were only civilians killed or was the camp home to fighters of the PLO as some of the Christian Phelange say?
Sharon's offense was not risking the lives of Israeli soldiers in a fight between Christian Arabs and Muslim Arabs. Christians killed Muslims and the Jews were blamed. Why is that? Is it because Jews are held to a different standard? Is it that we expect Arabs to act the way they did? It seems that the answer to both questions is yes.
Both parties playing politics for 2016
I see that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has a scandal on his hands regarding the closure of a pair of lanes to the George Washington Bridge, and the media ran with it big time.
At least he manned up and fired those responsible immediately, whereas President Barack Obama didn't do that with his scandals regarding Benghazi and the IRS. Obama finally is investigating the IRS scandal, but he appointed a person who contributed big time to his election to head it. I wonder how that's going to turn out.
This administration likes to sweep things under the rug. And the media stands behind regardless of how bad it is. This Chris Christie thing is all about Hillary Clinton running for president in 2016. We know that Christie and Clinton are going to run in 2016. It's all about politics.
Both parties are guilty of playing politics instead of what's good for the country and the folks. Sad.
Government must take care of veterans
I certainly agree with the recent letter, "Don't take money away from veterans." Whoever wants to cut benefits of our military veterans should be chastised. I cannot fathom the reasoning behind such a move.
Not only does it affect young veterans, but also those now aged. The only debate in Congress should be how to increase their benefits so they can return to civilian life and prosper.
I am a veteran from many years ago and it makes me ill to see this being discussed in Washington, D.C.
I am a registered Republican, but I do not vote the straight ticket. I have voted for Democrats many times. Why? I deeply feel that it is the responsibility of all voters to study the facts.
Write your person in Congress and the Senate to vote against any bill that will lessen veterans' benefits. We are giving away millions to those who have crossed our borders and have not done one thing to better our nation or themselves. I do not contend all illegal immigrants are taking money from our pockets, many of them are hard working and taxpaying.
