A person died when their vehicle went off Highway 17 near the Lexington Reservoir and plummeted about 100 feet down an embankment, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officials said it was apparently a solo-vehicle crash that happened around 5:09 p.m. in the southbound lanes near Alma College Road, south of Los Gatos. The driver was believed to be the sole occupant of the vehicle.
A traffic alert was issued around 5:35 p.m. as one of the lanes was closed for the investigation and to retrieve the vehicle, according to the CHP. Lanes were cleared and the alert lifted around 9 p.m., although traffic remained heavy along the corridor.
No further information about the crash or driver was immediately available.
