EUREKA -- A detective has testified that the man charged in the brutal slaying of a Northern California priest was in a "zombie-like state" and called himself the Archangel Michael when he showed up at his mother's house the morning of the slaying.

Humboldt County Superior Judge Marilyn Miles ruled at the end of a preliminary hearing on Tuesday that there was sufficient evidence for Gary Bullock to stand trial on murder and other charges in the New Year's Day beating death of Rev. Eric Freed in Eureka.

Bullock has pleaded not guilty.

According to the Times-Standard newspaper (http://bit.ly/1aJhGGs), Eureka Police Detective Jon Luken testified during the hearing that he talked to Bullock's stepfather, John Bruno, the day after the slaying. Bruno allegedly said Bullock was "whacked," and calling himself the Archangel Michael when he showed up unexpectedly on New Year's Day.
