OAKLAND -- An 81-year-old woman was shot in the shoulder during a home invasion robbery Tuesday morning in Oakland's upper Dimond District neighborhood, police said.

The incident, which may have started as a burglary, happened about 10:30 a.m. in the 4100 block of Laguna Avenue, according to police. The woman was hospitalized in stable condition after the shooting.

Police said the suspect is an African-American male, about 6 feet tall in his mid-20s, about 170 pounds, wearing all-dark clothing and armed with a handgun.

Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said it was unusual for police to be called to the normally quiet neighborhood, which is near Lincoln Avenue and the Mormon Temple.
