CASTRO VALLEY -- The immediate family of slain BART police Sgt. Tom Smith Jr., who was laid to rest Wednesday, issued the following message to the community on the program for the funeral service in Castro Valley:
"We want to express our gratitude for the outpouring of support that everyone has shown us through this difficult time in our lives. Unfortunately, we could search the dictionary from cover to cover and never find the words that would scratch the surface of how we feel about everyone who has touched our lives in the past few days.
"We have seen our little family grow to include other families, friends, co-workers, colleagues, communities, and acquaintances. Each of you have helped, and will continue to help, with the healing process. The growth of our family proves what we already knew, that Tommy touched so many lives on so many different levels, and fortunately we continue to reap the benefits of his generosity, compassion and love.
"To the BART police department, BART police associations, and all of the other police associations that have contributed in so many different ways, your assistance and emotional support have allowed us to begin the healing process, and that has no measure.
"Again, to everyone who has contacted us, prayed for us, had us in their thoughts, and contributed in any way on any level in the past week, please know that when we say thank you it comes with our sincere gratitude and so much emotion that we cannot find enough words to appropriately express it. Remember, every new day brings another day of healing."
