LIVERMORE -- A 71-year-old sex offender convicted of child abuse a quarter-century ago and released from prison has been arrested again on a similar charge, police said Thursday.

Jesus Vega Jr., of Sunnyvale, was charged with engaging in three or more acts of substantial sexual conduct with a child under 14 years old after being arrested on Jan. 23, Livermore police Officer and spokesman Steve Goard said. Detectives arrested Vega without incident.

Goard said news of the arrest was delayed to give the victim, a 6-year-old girl, and her family time to deal with the news of Vega's arrest going public. The victim was an acquaintance of Vega, Goard said.

Vega was convicted in April 1989 on three counts of committing lewd and lascivious acts with a child under age 14 and was sentenced to eight years in prison, said. He was listed on the National Sex Offender Public Registry.

Police do not believe that Vega victimized anyone else, but did urge anyone with information about this case to call 925-294-7531.
