SAN MATEO COUNTY -- San Mateo County Superior Court is now accepting applications for the grand jury term beginning July 1, officials said.
Applications for service on the 2014-15 civil grand jury will be accepted for consideration until March 28, and is open to any San Mateo County resident 18 years or older. Applicants must have lived in the county for more than a year, be of ordinary intelligence and good character, and express sound judgment and sufficient knowledge of the English language, officials said.
The civil grand jury performs an independent citizen watchdog function over county and city governments by selecting its own investigation subjects, publishing reports that highlight findings and making recommendations for improvement. More than 600 recommendations were made as a result of grand jury investigation reports from 2010 to 2012, recommendations that have been or were committed to be implemented.
The grand jury judge will interview qualified applicants and will make the final selection by random draw. The next grand jury term will begin July 1, and ends June 30, 2015.
Court officials reiterated that they strive to get a balanced cross section of the county population to serve on the grand jury, and encouraged all interested residents to apply. For more information and to download an application form, visit www.sanmateocourt.org/court_divisions/grand_jury, email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 650-261-5066.
The San Mateo County Association of Grand Jurors is hosting six public information sessions around the county. Recent former grand jurors will explain the grand jury process, time commitments, benefits of service, answer questions for potential applicants, and connect interested citizens who want even more information with its network of volunteers.
