Newark man arrested after shooting at bar

A man who was booted from a bar after a verbal fight with a bar bouncer was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after he returned with a gun and fired multiple rounds at the bouncer and 30 other patrons inside the bar, police said Saturday.

No one was injured.

Miguel Vargas, 31, of Newark, was asked to leave the El Camino Bar on Niles Boulevard after the argument. He complied, but police said he then went home, grabbed a gun and came back to the bar and started shooting.

One arrested, one escapes after chase

One person was arrested and another escaped capture after a short chase Friday on eastbound Interstate 580, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The chase began about 7 p.m. when a driver failed to stop at a stop sign near Golf Links Road. Officers tried to pull the car over, but the driver fled, the CHP said.

The driver and a male passenger continued from eastbound I-580 to Highway 24, eventually leaving the highway and driving into Berkeley.

The driver stopped the car in South Berkeley and attempted to escape on foot along with the passenger.

CHP officers arrived and detained the driver, who was arrested on a weapons violation.

The passenger was able to escape, the CHP said.
