OAKLAND -- Police are investigating the death of a man found alongside railroad tracks Monday afternoon in East Oakland.

Police believe the man was hit by a train that did not stop, possibly because operators were not aware they had struck someone.

Police were trying to identify the man and contact relatives.

He was found about 1:39 p.m. near the tracks in the area of East 12th Street and 22nd Avenue. He had multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were trying to determine why the man was in the path of the train.
