OAKLAND -- An Oakland man was sentenced Thursday to more than five years in prison for robbing various East Bay bank branches of thousands of dollars in 2012 and 2013, according to federal authorities.

Amanuel Moreno, 21, admitted to stealing more than $6,100 by robbing five banks in Hayward, Oakland and San Leandro between December 2012 and January 2013, according to federal authorities. Moreno pleaded guilty to all seven counts last October.

He also attempted to rob Chase Bank branches in Alameda and Union City on two different days last December, federal authorities said.

Moreno was arrested last year by local law enforcement officials and remained in custody on a probation violation until he was transferred to federal custody last July.

During robberies and attempted robberies, Moreno entered the banks and passed the tellers threatening notes demanding money and alerting them that he had a gun, authorities said. In the last three incidents Moreno threatened to shoot the tellers, authorities said.
