CASTRO VALLEY -- A crash involving a big rig and a trailer hauling a horse tied up traffic along Interstate 580 in Castro Valley on Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

No one was seriously injured in the wreck.

The two-vehicle crash was reported about 11 a.m. near the Strobridge Avenue off-ramp after the trailer carrying a horse rear-ended the big-rig, which had been experiencing mechanical issues, said CHP Officer Eric Thomas.

"The truck was pulling off to the side of the road and the trailer's brakes locked up," Thomas said.

The trailer, following behind, did not have time to stop and subsequently rear-ended the big rig.

The rig's driver was not injured but the driver of the trailer, a woman, was taken to a hospital to be treated for unknown injuries.

An initial report from the scene indicated the horse was injured, but the horse was later deemed to be in good health, Thomas said.

The wreck had several lanes of westbound 580 closed for more than an hour.

Officers reopened all lanes of traffic about 12:30 p.m.
